Activities

Karuna Charities Washington, Inc. has donated well over $500,000 to good causes since its inception in May 1998.  Karuna’s activities are summarized below.

Provided money for a child’s brain surgery in Kerala, India.
Donated cash for a school for poor/disadvantaged girls in West Bengal, India.
Donated a sewing machine to facilitate a Baltimore woman’s independent living.
Tsunami victims, India–contributed $10,000 to the Prime Minster’s Relief Fund.

2004:

 Regional Cancer Association, Trivandrum, Kerala, India–contributed towards the construction of a waiting hall for the patients.
G.G.S.F–supported a young cancer patient’s treatment.
Provided cash to enable a needy woman under Crisis, Income, and Victims Services, Montgomery County, MD. Assistance was given for her transition towards independent living 
S.A.B–Supported a needy woman in her transition toward independent living.  Community Service–National Center for Children and Families.
Donated cleaning supplies, including vacuum cleaners, baby supplies, etc.  
Provided pro Bono legal services to three distressed women.  
   Supported a  young, teenage girl, a cancer patient from Chennai, Tamilnadu, India.  
Provided career training for a young Sri Lankan woman who was under counseling with the Abused Persons Program.                  

2003:

 Donated turkeys for Thanksgiving dinner to the residents of Central Union Mission, Washington, D.C.
Donated housewares, child care items, and $300 cash to the residents of the Stepping Stones Shelter in Rockville, Maryland.
Donated cooking materials, food, and cleansers to Mother Teresa’s home in Washington, D.C.
 Donated housewares and baby care items to the residents of the National Center for Children and Families in Bethesda, Maryland.
Donated $500 to a pastor for assisting a young Harijan boy with leukemia in Sasphavattpop village, Kerala, India.  
  Donated $500 to the Jan Kalyan Trust in Noida, Delhi, India towards financial support for a 24/7 medical facility for the elderly.                 

2002

Donated $5000 to the Friends of Action for Securing Health for All (ASHA) in New Delhi, India. ASHA’s founder and director, pediatrician, Kiran Martin was awarded the Padma Shri award by the President of India for her outstanding contribution to the slum dwellers of Delhi. ASHA provides health care and promotes economic development to the poorest sections of society.
Donated 35 turkeys at Thanksgiving to the homeless at Central Mission Union.
Donated cleaning supplies to AIDS patients at Mother Teresa’s Home. Supported abused women in a program run by ASHA in the Washington area.
Donated backpacks and other school supplies to the residents of the National Center for Children and Families in Bethesda, Maryland.
Donated cleaning supplies and baby supplies to Stepping Stones Shelter in Rockville, Maryland.
Held the fourth annual Karuna Golf Tournament. Net proceeds benefit two battered women under Crisis, Income, and Victims Services, Health and Human Services, Montgomery County, MD. Assistance is being continued for their transition towards independent living.

Supported Nabha Nishana, a blood collection center in Calcutta, West Bengal, India. Supported Dignity Education Vision International (DEVI), a village-based school for poor children focused on the education of girls. DEVI is headquartered in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India.
Provided money for phone cards for destitute women sheltered by ASHA in Washington.
Provided money for Operation Smile when it operated on children with cleft lips in Jamshedpur, Bihar, India.
